Is GeM registration free?

Yes, registration on the GeM portal is completely free. The Government of India does not charge any fee for seller registration. However, you need to pay a refundable Caution Money Deposit (₹5,000 to ₹1,00,000 based on turnover) and Vendor Assessment fee (₹11,200 + GST) if you want OEM status. If you hire a consultant for registration support, their professional fee is separate.

How long does GeM registration take?

Basic seller registration can be completed within 1-2 hours if all documents are ready. Profile verification typically takes 24-48 hours. Complete activation including product listing may take 3-5 business days. OEM registration with vendor assessment can take 2-4 weeks depending on the assessment agency's schedule.

What documents are required for GeM registration?

Essential documents include: PAN Card (business/proprietor), Aadhaar Card of authorized signatory, GSTIN (if applicable), Business Registration Certificate, Bank Account details with cancelled cheque, and Address Proof. For companies, additional documents like Incorporation Certificate, MOA/AOA are required. OEM registration requires Trademark Certificate and quality certifications.

When will I receive payment for orders?

As per GeM policy, payment is processed within 10 days of goods/services acceptance by the consignee. The payment is made directly to your registered bank account through the integrated payment system. This is one of the fastest payment cycles compared to traditional government procurement.

Is GST registration mandatory for GeM?

GST registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for special category states) or if you're involved in inter-state supply. For sellers below this threshold, GST may not be mandatory but is recommended for better business prospects. Many government buyers prefer GST-registered vendors.

Can I sell services on GeM or only products?

Yes, GeM supports both products (goods) and services. Service categories include IT services, consulting, transportation, housekeeping, security, maintenance, healthcare services, and many more. Service providers need to register separately and meet category-specific qualification criteria.

What are transaction charges on GeM?

GeM charges transaction fees only when your sales exceed certain thresholds. As per the Revenue Policy (v1.5 from August 2024), transaction charges are 0.5% on orders above ₹5 lakhs, capped at maximum ₹3 lakhs per transaction. Small orders below ₹5 lakhs have no transaction charges.

What is L1 bidding on GeM?

L1 refers to the "Lowest Price" bidder who meets all technical and quality requirements. In GeM's competitive bidding system, the contract is typically awarded to the L1 seller. To become L1, your bid must be the lowest among all qualified bidders. Strategic pricing while maintaining quality is key to winning L1 position.
