What is the maximum foreign currency I can carry as cash while travelling abroad?

As per RBI guidelines, you can carry up to USD 3,000 (or equivalent in other currencies) in the form of foreign currency notes per trip. Any amount beyond this must be loaded on a forex travel card or carried as traveller's cheques. The overall limit under LRS is USD 2,50,000 per financial year for all purposes combined.

What is the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS)?

LRS is an RBI scheme introduced in 2004 that allows Indian resident individuals to remit up to USD 2,50,000 per financial year abroad for any permissible current or capital account transactions. Permitted purposes include education, medical treatment, travel, gifts, donations, investments, property purchase abroad, and maintenance of relatives. The limit is per individual per financial year and resets every April 1st.

What is TCS on foreign remittance and how does it work?

Tax Collected at Source (TCS) is applicable on outward remittances under LRS. From April 2025, no TCS is levied on the first ₹10 lakh of remittances in a financial year (combined across all purposes). Beyond ₹10 lakh, the rate depends on purpose: 5% for education/medical, 20% for tour packages and other purposes. TCS is not an additional tax — it is collected upfront and can be adjusted against your total income tax liability or claimed as refund while filing ITR. It is reflected in your Form 26AS.

What is Form 15CA and 15CB? When are they required?

Form 15CA is an online declaration by the remitter that ensures the payment made to a non-resident is in compliance with Indian tax laws. Form 15CB is a certificate from a Chartered Accountant certifying that taxes have been properly deducted and paid on the foreign remittance. Can I use my international credit card abroad instead of forex?

Yes, as per the Ministry of Finance announcement dated June 28, 2023, the use of international credit cards while overseas is currently not considered as a remittance under LRS. Hence, no TCS is applicable on international credit card spends abroad (until further notice). However, a markup of 2-4% is typically charged by banks on credit card foreign transactions, making forex cards or cash more economical for larger spends.

How quickly can I get foreign currency?

For popular currencies like USD, EUR, GBP, AED, and SGD — same-day delivery is often possible if documents are submitted by noon. For other currencies, 1-2 business days may be required. What happens to unspent foreign currency after my trip?

As per RBI rules, you must surrender unspent foreign currency within 180 days of returning to India. You can retain up to USD 2,000 (or equivalent) in foreign currency notes or traveller's cheques for future use. If you have more than this amount, you must sell it back to an authorized dealer.
